12 years with Ten Live – women in recruitment
Karen McGuigan has just celebrated 12 years with Ten Live. What an amazing achievement. Karen is Divisional Manager within the industrial and commercial sector – across perm and temp.
In our women in recruitment series, we asked Karen about her experience in recruitment, what advice she would offer to females in our industry and what has changed during her time in recruitment.
Here’s what she had to say:
1. Give us an overview of your job
Firstly, I love my job. It is challenging, and no day is the same. Daily, I engage with a diverse range of people. When you meet a new client, they trust you to support their business growth and talent needs.
I am very proud to be a part of creating hiring success that powers business growth. And it feels great when you achieve what you set out to do.
2. Tell us a bit about life at Ten Live.
Ten Live is a global recruitment agency, headquartered in Scotland. I have worked with Ten Live since the day we opened on the 1st March 2010. In fact, that’s where our name came from. We went live in 2010 – Ten Live.
We exist to make working lives great and believe in empowering people to prosper and inspire purpose in everyday working lives. And I am rewarded every day to be working with an amazing team of people who help and support each other.
3. What are you most proud of in your career so far?
I have had a few achievements, but one of my proudest was being pivotal in supporting a client move their operations to a different location. My remit was to recruit over 70 people all at once – ready to start on the day of the move.
It was challenging to say the least and equally rewarding when I achieved it.
4. What have you sought to change in your life to improve your health and wellbeing?
Juggling work and family can be incredibly challenging. That’s why physical exercise is a big part of my life. Working out early, before work, sets me up for the day ahead and adding this vital element to my already rigorous daily routine, helps to keep my mind focused.
The fact is, we are all so busy, and I challenge myself not to make excuses. Without this part of my routine, I would not be able to give my all to work. It is incredibly important to both my physical and mental wellbeing.
5. What advice would you give to women in recruitment or considering a career in recruitment?
Go for it. There is no limit to your success. I’ve worked across multiple sectors in completely different roles, and I have found my ideal job in recruitment. Recruitment is challenging for anyone.
Transparent feedback and complete honesty is key, and it helps people decide if this is the right thing for them or not.
6. When you’re not being awesome in recruitment, what do you do?
I spend my weekend enjoying family time. Also, I eat well and train hard. Mental and physical health is very important to me.
Join a culture with diverse perspectives and opportunities.
