Gerry has a wealth of experience in multi-lingual recruitment, talent development & management, HR, business development, sales, people management, mentoring and corporate training. About Gerry

For over 20 years Gerry has worked in business development with HR departments of major corporations; as a director of corporate training in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries in France. He has even set up and run his own highly successful company!

Gerry has fantastic senior management experience and multi-lingual talents. This means he is exceptionally well-placed to handle all our commercial senior executive appointments and recruitment projects across France, the Benelux countries and North Africa.

He is extremely passionate about people and skills development and is a mentoring expert, having run one of the world’s top business school programmes at Insead Paris, preparing high-calibre candidates for interview and the job market.

In fact, Gerry is passionate about all he does! When he’s not being a top Recruitment Consultant he loves taking on an adventure having climbed Mont Blanc and qualified as a hang-gliding instructor. He also loves keeping himself super-fit at the gym and immersing himself in the local community – Gerry is chair of Kilmacolm-Mérignies Twinning Society, a Chamber of Commerce business mentor and an NLP Master Practitioner.

Q&A with Gerry

Which sectors do you predict growth in 2016-2017?

Here in Scotland we are particularly excited by the new wave of other start-up companies, such as Administrate, following the lead of unicorn start-ups such as Skyscanner and Fanduel. Indeed industry experts say “… the country has “without a doubt” the potential to see more follow in their footsteps” (full article here).

The UK is undoubtedly leading the way for tech start-ups, but we are also seeing growth across Europe. Some of Europe’s fastest growing companies in 2016 include French tech companies such as ‘Finnexkap’, ‘1001Pharmacies’ and ‘Aircall’. Elsewhere in Europe there are companies such as Swiss-based online video streaming platform ‘Viewster’, Norway-based cloud storage company ‘Leapp Group’ and Dutch online start-up ‘Co-Gaming’.

In the UK we saw digital technology industries growing 32% faster than the rest of the UK’s economy in 2016; including computer programming, scientific research and the manufacture of computer and electronic products.

Other growth sectors we are seeing include education, health, business services, logistics/distribution, and food and drink. This is seen in hotels, restaurants and drinks manufacturing, such as craft beers and health drinks (read more here).

What are the major challenges for companies looking to recruit in 2016-2017?

A major issue we are finding with start-ups is the difficulty they have in sourcing the right technical resource to staff and then help grow their businesses:

“People think that unicorns are just formed by the founder and that team, but you need lawyers and accountants who understand how these things work and recruitment companies who know how to step on the gas. It’s a whole ecosystem that you need around you to form a unicorn.” (full article here)  

In the engineering, accountancy, logistics and construction sectors we are also aware of major skills shortages. In-house training apprenticeships, such as Balfour Beatty’s  ‘5Pc Club’ apprenticeship initiative, is some attempt at tackling the skills shortage situation. However, UK companies should also look outwith the UK to attract the right talent.
