Great news for UK Labelling & Packaging! The sector is bucking the trend in the UK Labelling & Packaging industry. The sector is faring much better than the overall UK printing industry which is predicted to decline by 0.1% per annum to £23.2bn by 2020 due to virtual and online media reducing the demand for printed products. Publication printing segments (newspapers, magazines, books, directories and catalogues) are declining significantly, steadily being replaced by ‘new media’– eBooks, online, electronic and social media. The UK Printing industry was the world’s fifth largest producer of printed products in 2017, but turnover declined to £13.8bn turnover in 2017 (down from £14.3bn turnover in 2010), with8400 companies (down from 10,500 in 2010) and 116,000 employees (from 140,000 in 2010).
In contrast, continued growth is predicted for the UK Labelling & Packaging sector; from 2013-2018 the UK Labelling & Packaging sector experienced an annual growth rate of 2.5 %. The sector is set to continue to grow by 2.2% per annum through to 2020. At the start of 2018 turnover for the sector was £5bn with 22,454 employees.

Key Trends In The UK Labelling & Packaging Sector 2018
Making The Sector More Attractive As A Career Of Choice
Today students do not leave school or university thinking of entering the print or packaging industry as a career path. Something the sector says needs to change. The rising age of print workers is also a concern for the sector. The new Apprenticeship Levy should see more companies getting involved in education and training of staff to drive up new talent attraction in 2018, as well as retain skilled employees. The EFIA is also supporting the flexo industry with a newly launched e-training Academy and is linking with a number of educational institutions to support its members.
Digital technology – an increase in UK labelling and print manufacturers exploring innovative (digital) label and packaging solutions is forecast in 2018 offering cost-effectiveness, professional high-quality printing, increased profit and sustainability, opportunities to speed up time-to-market, improve quality assurance processes, increase speed and drive efficiency
Personalisation of food & drinks labelling and packaging -almost two-thirds of all printed packaging used for the food and drinks industry. Developments in technology solutions will allow for increasing mass personalisation in food & drinks labelling & packaging and provide labelling & packaging manufacturers with a powerful marketing tool; the recent successful Nestlé U.K. KitKat personalisation campaign which resulted in 56,000 custom-made wrappers inviting customers to enter via online pack code to have a KitKat with a personalised message and photos.
Sustainability – to ensure labelling & packaging companies remain competitive within their markets, they will need to guarantee that sustainable practices and technology are implemented in every step of their supply chains
