2019 – New Year, New Career

Hello 2019, New Year, New Career! The New Year means that people will be setting new goals, targets and achievements for the year ahead. One of these could very well be a change in career or gain a promotion in work – whatever you wish to achieve, follow our handy tips into making 2019 your year to be successful in your career.

1. ‘What Do I Want To Gain From My Career?’

That’s something that only you can answer. People are very quick into jumping into the unknown without answering this vital question. Is it something you want long-term? Is this a stepping stone in the right direction? When you have it answered, you can then proceed into updating and revamping your CV and cover letter.

2. Revamp Your CV/Cover Letter

When looking at job descriptions and role specifications, this is when these types of documents should be tailored to the role that you’re applying for. Potential employers will appreciate the hard work and effort which has gone into creating the CV and Cover Letter especially for them. To make your documents current and ready for 2019, look at some CVs which are online for current trends and design ideas.

3. Know Your Goals!

When setting yourself goals, make sure that they are SMART.

Specific – have you got your goals finalised to every detail?
Measurable – in what way can you measure your goals?
Achievable – what actions will be taken to make sure you can succeed?
Reliable – are your goals relevant to your career?
Time – how much time do you have to achieve these goals?

How many goals you have will be completely up to the individual however 5 is a good number to have and make sure that they are varied between professional and personal goals.

4. Nail Those Interview Questions!

You know the ones we’re talking about:  The ‘Tell us about a time when…’ scenarios which seem to put you on the spot. Have these questions perfected to a T! Potential employers will be looking for people who can solve problems, bring something unique to the team and be an overall great team player. Remember to show your passion and enthusiasm, let that shine through!

5. Do Some Networking!

Using LinkedIn is a great way of starting your professional career and make use of the profile by mentioning your skills, achievements and why you’re the ideal candidate! Look at people in similar job roles to the career path you wish to take, view their skillset and see what you could work on to impress your potential employees!
