Employer Hiring In The UK Remains Positive – September 2018 Update

Despite a deterioration in the prospects for the UK economy, UK employer confidence in making hiring and investment decisions in their own businesses remained positive, according to a recent report.

Neil Carberry REC  Chief Executive said:

The report’s remarkably robust findings on hiring show that employers are still ready to invest in their own business where they see customer demand. Recruiters are working hard to fill job vacancies and aid future growth. Employment is high, however candidate availability is tight”.

Permanent Employer Hiring June to August 2018

97% of employers said they planned to increase their permanent headcount in the short term. This is up by 19% from a year earlier and by 22% in 2016. However, 50% of employers expressed concerns about the sufficient availability of candidates for permanent hire. The top three areas of concern in this quarter were the same as Q2. Engineering & Technical had the highest skills shortages, followed by health & social care and construction.

Temporary  Employer Hiring June to August 2018

85% of employers said they planned to increase their agency headcount in the short term, particularly in the Midlands. This is up by 7% from a year earlier. However, 60% of employers expressed concerns about the sufficient availability of candidates for temporary hire. Marketing, Media & Creative  had the highest skills shortages, followed by drivers and construction.

Going forward, Neil Carberry acknowledged the impact Brexit will have on future hiring:

Regarding our ongoing negotiations with the EU, UK business will need to adapt to whatever deal is done. UK employers are making contingency plans for what a deal or no deal scenario may bring”.

Ten Live Group Director Joanne Telfer commented:

“What we are seeing is a buoyant market. In our core sectors such as supply chain logistics, the demand for drivers continues to be extremely high.  Despite the UK-wide  driver shortage, Ten Live is in a position to easily meet our customer demands due to the high driver referral rate we have. Plus, the fact that our drivers rate us 100% excellent for service means that we have extremely loyal drivers. In manufacturing we are seeing demand for all specialisms from engineering, production to finance and senior management. Again, despite key skills shortages, our specialist recruiters are able to source the best in the marketplace, in fact exceeding client expectations with the quality of candidates supplied.”
