GCC Healthcare Jobs – Government Priorities & Private Investment

Over the past few years the GCC region has witnessed significant growth across several sectors and the healthcare industry has emerged as one of the most critical sectors for pursuing economic diversification. The region has made considerable efforts to upgrade its medical facilities, leading to the expansion of healthcare spending. With the decline in oil prices GCC governments began looking at private sector involvement as an alternative to sustain healthcare funding and are keenly promoting PPPs, rolling out mandatory insurance coverage and encouraging private players to set up facilities. Further, the sector is witnessing a structural shift as a younger, a more health-conscious population is seeking preventive care rather than curative care.

The entry of foreign players through strategic collaborations are expected to further transform the healthcare landscape as they help develop new products and services, particularly across the digital space with key participation by both PE players and institutional investors.

Healthcare remains the major government expenditure and the private (international) sector is considered as a key partner in the long-term development of the sector, in particular in terms of quality care. In fact, economic diversification plans and national healthcare strategies to decrease the capacity shortage and improve the quality standards of the medical services, are leading states to open the sector to full foreign ownership and share the healthcare burden with the private sector.

GCC Healthcare Jobs – Market Size

The GCC  private healthcare market w is now forecast to reach $69.4bn in 2018, growing 8.7% annually to reach $94bn in 2021. Healthcare services account for the majority share of the private healthcare industry at 79% and is the fastest growing segment in the UAE.

GGC Healthcare Jobs – Opportunities

To ease the growing pressure on current governemnt GCC healthcare systems, GCC governments are injecting huge funds as well as encouraging private sector participation to build hospitals and clinics, upgrade the existing infrastructure, and match the quality of services offered in developed countries.

The healthcare services market is also undergoing structural shifts to adapt to the demands of health-conscious and digital savvy population. Some new areas such as telemedicine, home health care and long-term care are outperforming traditional health service providers such as hospitals and clinics. The GCC region is seeing a shift from curative to preventive healthcare. Also, digital technology is transforming the sector, thereby creating investment opportunities in niche segments of specialised and customised healthcare.

GCC Healthcare Jobs – Recruitment & Retention Of Skilled Medical Professionals

However, the expansion of GCC healthcare sector is also dependent on the availability of skilled healthcare professionals. GCC countries will have to increase efforts to promote job opportunities and careers in the healthcare sector among nationals in;

  • Doctors, nurses – internal medicine, general surgery, anesthesiology, radiology
  • Health administration, health economics, health regulations and health informatics

As GCC governments seek to upskill nationals and build healthcare education resources to strengthen their  domestic workforces, they face high costs to recruit and retain skilled, experienced staff.

Also, with many new hospital developments underway, the competition to hire experienced and skilled healthcare professionals, physicians, nurses and new skills sets such as digital skills,  is set to intensify.  In some GCC countries, the large dependence on expats is also cause for concern as the world’s medical sectors are also experiencing serious shortages of skilled medical professionals.
