We caught up with Kevin to find out what’s happening in (Industrial) Recruitment in 2018
Q. How is UK hiring in 2018?
Kevin: The mood amongst UK employers still remains cautious in light of Brexit, but we are still seeing around 20% of employers across the board stating that they will be looking to hire new staff over the next few months and even longer term in 2018. Top five Sectors for high growth in 2018
Q.What Are The Key Issues UK Employers Are Currently Facing With Regard To Hiring?
Kevin: Employers are finding it increasingly difficult to find workers with the correct skill sets and qualifications. Skill mismatching is a problem, with 1.5m people under-qualified to perform their present job role. Conversely, 4.6m people are over-qualified.
The number of unemployed people for every vacancy in the UK is also falling. The figure is currently 2.2 people per vacancy. In the services sector for example, recent research by the BCC (British Chambers of Commerce) showed 71% of businesses are finding it difficult to hire the right workers – the highest figure on record.
Q. Which Sectors are experiencing the greatest skills shortages?
Kevin: Construction, manufacturing & production, healthcare and IT are experiencing the biggest shortages of talent.
In manufacturing, for example, three-quarters of companies seeking staff were encountering problems attracting workers with the right skills sets.
In food & drink manufacturing the sector will require 109,000 staff over the next decade in order to meet government targets. Food & drink is the largest field of manufacturing in the UK and is worth more than £96 billion. The greatest talent shortages are senior roles within science and development, however, there is thought to be a need for nearly 50,000 production staff
Regardless of sector, quality recruitment remains the key to quality hires!
